My last – rather technical post – received mediocre viewing, so I’m forced to use lethal weapons to attract your attention…

Here is Janni Honscheid !

If you read the previous post with the 2016 season’s review, you already know that my small Cross 84, failed to complete the season, due to structural breakdown.

Expecting to repair a wooden-skinned  board first week of August, proved unrealistic. Not even the bamboo veneers supplier was in town. This idle time, allowed me to reconsider: I never really liked the heavily loaded decoration of this dynamically sailing board – especially the blue/white pads. Having just 2 options – black or white – I chose black. The original Exocet footstraps are not very comfortable (which is something repeatedly pointed out by testers), so I decided to change them as well. At the beginning, I thought black footstraps would be nice, but when I tried blacks, the dark area became too heavy for the otherwise multicolored deck, so once again I used the Dakine Primos I have used for the Fanatic Ultra Cat. They give a more balanced result.

The exposed wooden area between the front & the rear pads that was replaced, was originally decorated with splashes of colors, a flying fish & the details of the board with horrible numbers.

I grew at a time that workshops were decorated with sexy ladies but no fish, so my idea for a decorative upgrade for my board naturally was centered on an pin-up sexy girl, preferably related to the sea. And here comes the image of a mermaid – not one out of a story for kids, deprived of offering pleasure, but one created for adults: The fetish queen Betty Page clad in latex and created by non other, but the famous pin-up artist Olivia De Berardinis, a regular contributor to Playboy magazine, honoring the tradition of Vargas.

If you are still unsure about the appeal mermaids have on humans, just check the blog “I am a mermaid.”

I shaped myself the displacement “84” label of the board, added a film-like label for the dimensions, and since the looks of the board would be more to my taste, I decided to call it Hitthewave Special.desired-hitthewave-special-layout

The layout of the composition was done by my long time class-mate Spiros Th., since he was the best student of the whole 2-membered seminars we attended.

Kostas @  boardsnwheels , did the repair which was not a small one, but as he needed masking on different areas than the ones my layout would cover, changed without letting me know first, the arrangement of the composition…The result is still good, but not as good as I had thought, while the front pad is not fully symmetrically cut. I hope more attention was given to the solidity of the repair, which does not seem to have put any extra weight, as I weighted the board @ 6,3kg.cross-iv-pro-hitthewave-special-decoration

As a final touch, I added a Hitthewave Special designation logo to the nose bottom as well.exocet-cross-hitthewave-special-bottom-detail-designation

I  don’t expect to sail the board earlier than next summer, but I don’t think I should not show it to you earlier. Enjoy!

Windsurfing being full of beautifully tanned and physically fit athletes, always had much more sex appeal than many other sports.

Windsurfers spend most of their time half naked or dressed in body hugging zipped rubber, in a wet environment. Does it need anything more?

Apologies for presenting only female athletes, but after all, this is just a personal blog…

Olympics Day 4 - SailingNikola Girke posing

Nikola Girke - CAN 17For Nikola Girke, we have a rare case of an athlete, who has made the transition from one sport to another and to have competed in two different events at the Olympic Games. At the 2004 Athens Olympics , Nikola crewed on the two person 470 sailboat, finishing 13th. In 2005, she switched to RSX windsurfing.  A respectable 17th place finish at the 2008 Olympic Games, inspired her to continue in pursuit of bringing home an Olympic Medal for Canada. Result, an improved performance for the 34 years lady sailor, a 10th place at the 2012 London Olympics plus the same position at the 2012 RSX World Championship. It should not pass unnoticed, while training in the Brazilian waters, she won the Buzios event of the Brazilian Slalom Championship (just for the fun of it), plus the 2nd place of the Buzios leg of the S.American RSX Championship!…With her sights set on Rio 2016, Nikola is up for yet another challenge, switching boats for a 3rd time, teaming up with Luke Ramsay for the new mixed crew catamaran, the Nacra17. With such determination, we look ahead for the medals. Instead of just reading about, watch this short video.

Here I present interesting ideas, unusual materials, beautiful custom boards, records.

This old video of the windsurf 1981 Weymouth Speed Trials, vividly demonstrates the efforts of the early riders using the rather primitive equipment of that era.

The Swedish record holder Anders Bringdal broke first the 50 knot barrier twice, with 50.41 and then 50.46 knots improving at the same time the world record on Production Boards.

After that Antoine Albeau surpassed Anders’ performance with 50.62 knots, recovering his position of world record holder.

In the ladies category, Zara Davis also improved her World Record with 44.92 knots and so did Lena Erdil improving her Turkish Record with 43.81.

The record on Tandem category (1 board / 2 sails / 2 riders), was also broken with 38.12 knots!

Many other National Records were smashed:

Patrick Diethelm  improved his Swiss/Italian record  with 49.71 knots, positioning himself 3rd fastest in the world.

Cedric Bordes: 49.66 knots, positioning himself 4th fastest in the world.

Nick Vardalachos @ 50,56 knots new GREEK record and 5th fastest in the world.
British Farrell O’Shea improved his record with 48.21 kts.

Mark Grinnell from South Africa and Matthias Röttcher from Namibia improved their national records. Mark: 46.49 kts and Matthias: 46.69 kts.

Christian Benzing who was battling with his German fellow countrymen, broke the German Record in Windsurfing with 45.57 knots.

A very unusual early board was the aluminium French Wildfire Alusurf (1980), hollow if I recall well, which could be ordered in any anodised color! I have no idea how dangerous it must have been sailing it in overcast/rainy weather, especially using a hi-tec aluminium mast of that era…

TILLO  Internationaldefi-edition-board-1

You should be familiar with the story of Alex Morales, from my older post : NOT windsurfing in Cuba – again!
Well, as Alex organizes in Miami slalom races of international level, producing at the same time boards of his own brand TILLO, I think there should be a rightful place for his boards at the Windsurfing Special section.

More as an update of his recent activities, comes this article of Timothy Venn @ BOARDS.

I love wood, so I’m always facinated by boards made with visible the beauty of the material. Nowdays, quite a few companies use more or less wood into their boards, but I would say two companies lead the field in a different way. The one is STARBOARD, and the other is T1. If you are interested in the technology each one of them uses, just click their names .

This division II racer of immaculate finish was presented by the Greek magazine Surf & Ski. It was an entry to the international regatta that took place in Porto Carras in Greece, but although they took photos and provide the info that was made by a Greek in BRAZIL, they failed to record THE NAME of the guy. The bottom photo  shows Greek athlete George Giagoulakis who raced the beautiful board. In the same article there is mention of a French entry of Herve Borde with an aluminium board.

SEPTEMBER  2012 : Thanks to ARG425, we got the missing info about the wooden DII board – “Grego”. It was buit in Brazil by naval architect Leonidas Zerboulis. Grego means Greek in portuguese.

There are 2 persons that influenced the evolution of wooden boards. The one is Jean Louis Colmas of Starboard and Gary Young of Bamboo Surfboards (also Woodwinds and WoodenBoards back then). Young has posted nice informative material @ his site.

OK, I have NOT met them, but that does not make them less gorgeous… The reason babes I know personally do not appear here, is that they do not wish so. Recently I decided to include fictional characters as well.

I got some negative response  for including BABES in my blog. I have to tell you that unfortunately – or hopefully (you can make your choice), my statistics show that it is one of the most viewed topics. I also have to admit that excluding nudes,  it becomes more difficult to choose a babe for posting !
